    Overview

    What is EXIF Remover?

The EXIF Remover strips hidden digital metadata from your photographs before you share them on social media, messaging platforms, or public websites. Modern smartphones and digital cameras embed extensive technical records into image files—including precise GPS latitude and longitude coordinates showing where you stood, camera serial numbers, lens models, shutter speeds, exposure settings, software versions, and exact date and time stamps. Our client-side privacy engine reads and displays these tags so you know what is embedded in your files, then scrubs them away. For JPEG, PNG, and WebP files, metadata segments are rewritten losslessly without re-encoding or degrading the underlying picture data. Everything runs on your device with zero network data transfer.

    Processing

    What happens to your photo

Four-step on-device pipeline from intake to final encoding without server roundtrips.

    Intake

Inspects binary file segments locally to detect TIFF headers, IFD records, and XMP XML packets.

    Parse

Decodes GPS rationals, camera model strings, exposure times, and timestamps into human-readable summaries.

    Sanitize

Rewrites file headers byte-for-byte, dropping tracking segments while preserving rotation flags.

    Export

Outputs pristine sanitized image files or packages batch results into a zip archive in local memory.

    Byte-identical pixels

JPEG, PNG, and WebP image payloads are never re-encoded; image clarity and pixel values remain 100% identical.

    GPS coordinate removal

Wipes latitude, longitude, altitude, and timestamp records so your physical whereabouts remain private.

    Equipment sanitization

Cleans camera make, model, lens specifications, and unique equipment identifiers from photo headers.

    Keep rotation option

Preserves the single EXIF orientation flag by default so portrait photos remain right-side up in every viewer.

    Zero network transmission

All metadata inspection and byte stripping happen purely in browser memory with no server uploads.

Every digital photograph captured by a modern smartphone or camera is more than just an arrangement of colorful pixels. Beneath the visible picture lies a hidden repository of digital data known as EXIF (Exchangeable Image File Format) and XMP (Extensible Metadata Platform) metadata.

While technical camera settings are helpful for professional photographers reviewing lighting ratios in a studio, embedded metadata frequently poses severe personal privacy and security risks when sharing images across the internet.

Glowpixel Labs’ EXIF Remover tool provides a completely free, fast, and private solution to inspect and strip all sensitive metadata from your images directly inside your web browser.

The hidden privacy risks of photo metadata

When you snap a picture with an iPhone, Android smartphone, or modern digital camera with location services enabled, the camera sensor records far more than just visual light:

    1. Exact GPS location coordinates: Most smartphones automatically record the device’s latitude, longitude, and elevation at the precise second the shutter button is pressed. When sharing pictures of personal belongings on online marketplaces, family photos from home, or pictures taken while traveling, anyone who saves your photo can open the file properties or use an EXIF viewer to extract your exact geographic coordinates down to a specific street address or apartment balcony.
    2. Date and timestamp trails: Photographs record the precise date, hour, minute, and second of capture. In combination with location data, timestamps establish detailed chronological timelines of your daily habits, routines, and physical locations.
    3. Equipment and hardware identifiers: Digital cameras and smartphone lenses embed specific make, model, lens serial numbers, firmware versions, and internal device names. This hardware fingerprint can link seemingly unrelated photographs uploaded anonymously across different online forums back to the same camera owner.
    4. Software editing histories: Desktop graphics editors like Photoshop or Lightroom often append XMP metadata containing author names, computer usernames, operating system versions, and document editing histories directly into exported files.

How Glowpixel Labs strips metadata losslessly

A major problem with conventional online metadata scrubbers is that they frequently decode incoming photos into uncompressed pixel rasters and then re-compress them through a lossy JPEG encoder. This destructive process degrades image sharpness, introduces compression artifacts, and alters original colors.

Our EXIF Remover uses an entirely different, high-fidelity engineering approach for standard image formats:

    • JPEG lossless byte rewriting: JPEG files are structured as a series of distinct markers, including SOI (Start of Image), application segments (APP0 through APP15), quantization tables (DQT), frame headers (SOF), scan headers (SOS), and compressed entropy data. Camera metadata, GPS coordinates, and Adobe XMP packets reside exclusively in APP1 (0xFFE1) and related application segments. Our engine parses the binary byte stream, extracts and removes the APP1 and auxiliary metadata segments, and leaves the DQT tables, SOF frames, and entropy scan data byte-for-byte untouched. Your picture pixels are completely identical to the original file down to the exact bit.
    • PNG chunk stripping: PNG files store metadata in ancillary chunks such as eXIf, tEXt, zTXt, and iTXt. Our tool filters out these non-critical chunks while preserving the core image headers (IHDR), color palettes (PLTE), and compressed image data (IDAT).
    • WebP container filtering: WebP files wrap VP8 or VP8L bitstreams inside a RIFF container. The tool strips EXIF and XMP chunks and clears the metadata presence flags in the VP8X header without altering compressed image slices.

    The ‘Keep image rotation’ safeguard

When capturing vertical photos on a smartphone, the camera hardware often keeps the physical image sensor raster oriented in landscape mode and simply writes an orientation tag (Tag 0x0112) to the EXIF header indicating whether the photo should be turned 90, 180, or 270 degrees.

If an overly aggressive metadata stripper deletes all EXIF tags indiscriminately, the resulting photo may display sideways or upside-down in web browsers and image viewers that lack automatic orientation detection.

Our tool solves this by providing a smart Keep image rotation tag toggle (enabled by default). When enabled, our lossless JPEG stripper extracts the orientation value, strips all GPS coordinates, camera serial numbers, and equipment tags, and re-emits a minimal, sanitized 34-byte APP1 segment containing solely the Orientation tag. All tracking data is purged while your photo remains right-side up everywhere. If you want every tag completely purged, simply uncheck the box.

Batch cleaning for up to 200 photos

If you are preparing an entire photo album for public upload, a real estate listing, or an insurance claim, sanitizing photos one by one is impractical.

Our EXIF tool supports batch processing of up to 200 image files simultaneously:

    1. Drag and drop a folder or select dozens of photos at once.
    2. The batch inspector reviews every file in your browser memory and flags any photos containing embedded satellite GPS coordinates with a clear warning.
    3. Clicking Remove Metadata processes each photo losslessly on your device processor.
    4. All cleaned photos are instantly compressed into a single clean ZIP archive using client-side memory compression for fast, one-click downloading.

    100% on-device privacy guarantee

The most critical aspect of an EXIF removal tool is trust. Uploading photos with sensitive location coordinates to an unknown cloud server defeats the purpose of protecting your location privacy.

Glowpixel Labs guarantees that none of your photographs, coordinates, or document contents are ever transmitted over the network. All file parsing, binary rewriting, and ZIP compilation execute exclusively on your own device’s CPU in accordance with our transparent privacy policy. If you need to further resize or convert your sanitized pictures, you can seamlessly use our resize image tool or compress image tool.

      FAQ

      Questions, answered

Common questions about formats, privacy, performance, and offline capabilities.

What is EXIF data in a photograph?

EXIF stands for Exchangeable Image File Format. It is a standard specification used by digital cameras, smartphones, and scanners to record technical metadata directly inside image files. This data includes camera make and model, lens details, exposure settings (aperture, shutter speed, ISO), date and time, and frequently geographic GPS coordinates.

Why is GPS metadata in photos a privacy concern?

Whenever you take a photo with a modern smartphone or GPS-enabled camera, the device records your exact satellite latitude, longitude, and altitude into the photo header. Anyone who downloads that photo can extract those coordinates and pinpoint exactly where you took the picture—such as your home, workplace, or your children's school.

Does removing metadata reduce the image quality of my photos?

No. For JPEG, PNG, and WebP images, our engine uses lossless byte rewriting. The image pixel data, entropy encoding, and quantization tables are preserved byte-for-byte. Only the metadata header chunks (such as APP1 EXIF, XMP, and PNG text chunks) are stripped away. Your visual image clarity remains 100 percent identical.

What does the 'Keep image rotation' option do?

Smartphones often write an EXIF Orientation tag to photo headers rather than physically rearranging sensor pixels when holding the phone vertically. If you completely strip all EXIF tags, some older photo viewers might display your portrait photo rotated sideways on its side. Leaving 'Keep image rotation' checked preserves only that single orientation flag while stripping all GPS, camera, and personal data.

Are my photos uploaded to any remote server?

No. All file reading, metadata inspection, and binary segment stripping execute completely on your device inside your web browser. No photos, thumbnails, or personal information ever leave your computer or phone.

Can I clean multiple photos at the same time?

Yes. You can select up to two hundred images at once or drag and drop an entire folder. The tool inspects each file, strips metadata from every image in sequence, and packages all cleaned files into a single ZIP archive for fast downloading.

What metadata formats does the tool inspect?

The tool inspects EXIF APP1 segments, Adobe XMP packets, IPTC records, PNG eXIf, tEXt, and iTXt chunks, WebP EXIF and XMP chunks, as well as ISO Base Media container metadata in HEIC and AVIF files.

Can I inspect the EXIF data without removing it?

Yes. When you choose an image, the tool immediately reads and displays key metadata fields—such as camera model, lens, exposure, date and time, and GPS coordinates—in the inspection panel before you click Remove Metadata.

Does this tool work on iPhone HEIC and modern AVIF files?

Yes. For HEIC and AVIF files, the tool inspects the container boxes for embedded metadata, and strips metadata by re-encoding the image through your browser's native decoder into a clean, sanitized JPEG or PNG output.

Can removed EXIF metadata ever be recovered?

No. Once an image file has had its metadata segments stripped and saved, the deleted metadata records are permanently gone from the resulting file. Your original file on your computer remains untouched unless you choose to overwrite it.
