How to blur or pixelate areas in a photo

    1. Select your image

Choose any photo, screenshot, or document from your device in JPG, PNG, WebP, or AVIF format.

    2. Draw and customize regions

Place rectangular or oval regions over sensitive areas, choosing blur, block pixelation, or solid cover-up boxes.

    3. Save censored image

Download the redacted image in its original format and quality with all GPS and camera metadata stripped.

    Irreversible block redaction

Pixelation enforces a minimum block size of 8 pixels at full export scale, preventing mathematical reconstruction or un-blurring attacks.

    Multi-region editing

Add and position multiple redaction areas simultaneously with independent effect types and strength controls.

    100% on-device processing

No images or private identifying data are ever uploaded over the network. Processing runs entirely in local browser memory.

    Overview

    What is Blur & Pixelate?

This page configures the Blur & Pixelate tool for solid redaction and blackout censorship. It presets an opaque black redaction box designed to completely cover and destroy sensitive text, confidential financial data, addresses, signatures, or private visual elements before sharing images online.

    Processing

    What happens to your photo

Four-step on-device pipeline from intake to final encoding without server roundtrips.

    Intake

Decodes the source photo into client memory with full orientation correction and strict memory safety limits.

    Overlay

Calculates precise bounding paths for rectangular and elliptical regions with pointer and keyboard controls.

    Redact

Applies Gaussian blur, nearest-neighbor downsampling pixelation, or opaque color fills to isolated canvas layers.

    Export

Encodes the modified image in the original format while stripping EXIF, GPS location tags, and device metadata.

    Zero network transmission

Private photos, identifying facial features, and home addresses remain on your computer or phone and are never sent to remote servers.

    Permanent information loss

Redacted pixels are overwritten destructively in memory, ensuring that hidden numbers or faces cannot be extracted from the file.

    Customizable strength

Tune the blur radius or pixelate block dimensions smoothly with live visual feedback on your screen.

    Shape flexibility

Switch effortlessly between rectangular boxes for text or license plates and elliptical shapes for human faces.

    Automated EXIF stripping

Output files have camera models, timestamps, exposure settings, and embedded GPS coordinates automatically removed.

    Keyboard accessible

Easily reposition, resize, and remove censorship regions using standard keyboard arrow and delete shortcuts.

Sharing screenshots of digital documents, receipts, software applications, or personal chat messages has become an everyday part of digital communication. However, screenshots frequently contain confidential details that should never be made public: personal email addresses, phone numbers, banking account figures, home addresses, customer names, or private messages in sidebars.

The preset on this page configures Blur & Pixelate specifically for censoring parts of an image with solid blackouts or privacy masks. Using our client-side editor, you can permanently erase sensitive information with opaque rectangular bars or smooth blurs in seconds without sending your documents across the web.

Why opaque solid boxes provide maximum security

When handling legally sensitive, financial, or confidential corporate documents, visual ambiguity is unacceptable. While artistic blurring looks pleasant in photography, confidential text redaction requires absolute data destruction:

    1. Complete pixel overwriting: When you draw a solid box over a line of text, the canvas engine overwrites every pixel in that bounding area with 100% opaque color (such as pure black #000000 or white #ffffff).
    2. Zero recoverable variance: In traditional insecure markup tools, a black bar is sometimes drawn as a floating vector shape over a PDF, allowing recipients to simply highlight and copy the text underneath. In Glowpixel Labs, the redaction is merged directly into the raster image buffer, permanently destroying the original characters.
    3. Immune to exposure manipulation: You cannot use Photoshop curves, brightness boosts, or contrast adjustments to reveal what was underneath. The pixel values inside the black box are identical across the entire shape.

    Common scenarios requiring image censorship

Obscuring specific parts of an image is an essential precaution in everyday digital life:

    • Financial and banking screenshots: Black out routing numbers, bank balances, transaction IDs, and credit card numbers before submitting expense reports or sharing payment proofs.
    • Identity cards and government documents: Censor Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, dates of birth, and physical addresses on scanned identification.
    • Customer service and bug reports: Obscure customer names, API keys, passwords, and database connection strings before posting bug tickets or forum questions.
    • Chat logs and messaging screenshots: Hide sender names, profile pictures, and irrelevant personal conversations before publishing public testimonials or social media discussions.

Flexible multi-area editing with keyboard support

Our editor accommodates complex documents with multiple confidential zones:

    • Multiple independent boxes: Add as many censorship boxes as your image requires. Black out five different account numbers across a multi-page receipt with ease.
    • Rectangles and ovals: Use sharp rectangular boxes for neat lines of text and paragraphs, or switch to ellipses to black out circular logos, stamps, or profile avatars.
    • Full keyboard navigation: Select any censor box and use the Arrow keys to nudge its position with pixel precision. Hold Shift for larger movements, or press Alt + Arrow keys to resize the box. Delete or Backspace instantly removes the active box.

Automatic metadata stripping and local on-device execution

In addition to visual censorship, our exporter strips all camera, device, and GPS metadata from your images upon download, preventing unintended location disclosures.

Every calculation and image transformation takes place locally in your web browser. Your private documents, screenshots, and confidential files never touch our servers or leave your device. Read our privacy policy for full details on our client-side privacy architecture.

      FAQ

      Questions, answered

Common questions about formats, privacy, performance, and offline capabilities.

Is blacking out text safer than blurring it?

Yes. An opaque solid box guarantees 100% complete destruction of underlying visual data. While high-strength blur and pixelation are also irreversible in our engine, a solid black bar provides zero mathematical ambiguity: all pixels inside the boundary are overwritten with pure solid color.

Can someone adjust contrast or brightness to reveal blacked-out text?

No. Adjusting brightness, curves, or exposure cannot reveal hidden content because the original pixels are completely erased from the image file during on-device canvas rendering. The blacked-out area contains only pure uniform color.

Can I change the color of the censor box?

Yes. While pure black (#000000) is standard, you can choose any color using the color picker, including white (#ffffff) to match paper documents or invoices.

Can I censor multiple parts of the same image?

Yes. You can add as many blackout or blur boxes as you need, resizing and placing each one over individual lines of text, account numbers, or signatures.
