How to crop and rotate your images

    1. Choose your photo

Select any image from your computer or phone. Your photo loads directly into the interactive crop canvas.

    2. Adjust frame and angle

Drag the crop handles or use keyboard arrows. Pick aspect ratios, rotate 90 degrees, or level horizons with straighten.

    3. Download clean crop

Export in your preferred format and quality. Transparent corners are preserved for circular and ellipse crops.

    Aspect-locked precision

Lock proportions to popular social standards, passport sizing, or custom dimensions with pixel-accurate readout.

    Free-angle straightening

Level crooked horizons smoothly from -45° to +45° with automated canvas bounding-box calculations.

    Complete local privacy

All cropping, rotation matrices, and encoding run on your device processor with zero network data transfer.

    Overview

    What is Crop & Rotate?

This page opens Crop & Rotate with a 90-degree clockwise turn applied. Continue rotating left or right, use the straighten control for a smaller correction, keep the full frame or crop its edges, and review the output before saving.

    Processing

    What happens to your photo

Four-step on-device pipeline from intake to final encoding without server roundtrips.

    Intake

Decodes photo headers in browser memory, respecting embedded EXIF orientations automatically.

    Transform

Applies hardware-accelerated 2D affine matrix transforms for rotation, flipping, and straighten angles.

    Clip

Calculates bounding limits, aspect constraints, and optional circular alpha masks for smooth corners.

    Encode

Exports the cropped canvas to your chosen format and quality with local memory reclamation.

    Zero data leakage

Your personal pictures and confidential documents never leave your phone or computer.

    Circle & ellipse crops

Create circular profile photos with transparent PNG or WebP corners ready for immediate avatar use.

    Touch & keyboard control

Nudge 1 pixel with arrow keys, 10 pixels with Shift, zoom with plus/minus, or drag 44px touch targets.

    Exact output dimensions

View real-time pixel widths and heights, and type target dimensions directly into the editable fields.

    EXIF-aware orientation

Smartphone camera photos are uprighted before you begin cropping so your framing is always accurate.

    Runs anywhere offline

Operates fully in modern web browsers even when disconnected from cellular or Wi-Fi internet.

Images can appear sideways for several reasons. A camera may store sensor pixels in one orientation and add a small EXIF instruction telling viewers how to display them. A scanner may capture a page in landscape orientation. A screenshot may have been taken while a device was turned, or a file may have passed through software that ignored its orientation tag.

This preset opens the Crop & Rotate tool with a 90-degree clockwise rotation. You can immediately save that orientation, turn the image the other way, rotate it again for 180 degrees, or combine a major turn with a subtle straighten adjustment.

    Use 90-degree rotation for orientation

A fixed quarter-turn is the right control when the image is on its side. Rotate right moves the top edge toward the right side; rotate left moves it toward the left. Two quarter-turns create a 180-degree result for an upside-down image. Because the operation is shown in the live stage, you can judge orientation visually instead of reasoning from metadata alone.

The engine accounts for the new canvas bounds when width and height exchange places. A landscape source becomes portrait after one quarter-turn, and the displayed output dimensions reflect that change. Keep the aspect setting on Free when you want to retain as much of the rotated frame as possible.

Use straighten for small angular errors

Straightening solves a different problem. A horizon may slope by two degrees even though the picture is otherwise upright. A photographed receipt may be slightly diagonal, and architectural columns may lean because the camera was not level. The straighten slider covers angles from -45 to 45 degrees, allowing a controlled correction rather than a full quarter-turn.

Free-angle rotation requires a larger mathematical bounding box. If a rectangle is turned inside a rectangular output, the corners may reveal empty areas unless the image is cropped inward. The stage and live preview make that tradeoff visible. Adjust the crop after leveling the important line so that no unwanted blank corners remain.

For landscapes, align the visible horizon rather than the physical edge of the photograph. For documents, choose a strong printed baseline. Perspective distortion is different from simple rotation: straightening can level a page, but it does not perform a four-corner perspective correction.

    Rotate, then refine the composition

Orientation often changes what feels balanced. After a portrait becomes upright, move or resize the crop box to restore headroom and edge spacing. Keyboard arrows nudge the frame one pixel, Shift plus an Arrow moves it ten pixels, and plus or minus changes its size. Aspect chips remain available if the final destination calls for a square, widescreen, portrait, or passport proportion.

The output width and height can be edited independently where the active aspect allows it. Choose dimensions that match the available source detail. Rotation repositions existing pixels; it does not add detail to a low-resolution image.

Save in the format your destination expects

JPEG is a common choice for camera photos, with adjustable quality. PNG is useful for screenshots, diagrams, and text-heavy graphics where lossless edges matter. WebP is another option for compatible web workflows. The preview reflects the crop and transform, while the selected format controls how that result is encoded.

If you only need different pixel dimensions after fixing orientation, continue with the image resizer. To reduce file weight for sharing, try the image compressor. Format changes are available in the image converter.

    Rotation without remote processing

The selected image is decoded, transformed, and encoded inside your browser. The original file remains on your device and is not replaced. No image data is sent to a remote editor, and nothing is uploaded for the rotation to work. Our privacy policy explains the site’s on-device approach in more detail.

Before saving, inspect the preview for clipped corners, confirm the rotation direction, and verify the exact pixel size. Those checks are particularly important for scans with text close to an edge and photographs where a straighten adjustment has narrowed the usable frame.

      FAQ

      Questions, answered

Common questions about formats, privacy, performance, and offline capabilities.

Can I rotate an image left as well as right?

Yes. Separate controls turn the image 90 degrees counterclockwise or clockwise, and repeated turns support 180- and 270-degree orientation changes.

What is the difference between rotate and straighten?

Rotate changes orientation in exact 90-degree steps. Straighten applies a free angle from -45 to 45 degrees for tilted horizons, scans, or architectural lines.

Why can straightening trim the edges?

A rectangle turned by a small angle no longer fills an axis-aligned rectangle without either empty corners or some trimming. The crop stage lets you choose the useful region after rotation.

Does rotating change the original file?

No. The original stays unchanged. The tool renders a separate rotated result for you to save.

Are my image pixels transferred online?

No. The rotation, preview, crop, and encoding operations run on your device. Nothing is uploaded for processing.
