    Overview

    What is Image Compressor?

The Image Compressor shrinks JPG, PNG, WebP, and AVIF files directly in your web browser. You get smaller images that stay sharp, with instant visual proof on your own photos. Pick a target size or let Smart compression choose for you. All processing runs privately on your device using Web Workers, with no file uploads, no sign-up, no watermarks, and no daily limits.

Large images slow down websites and cause upload errors on web portals. Compressing your photos reduces file weight while keeping visuals crisp. You get faster page loading, lower bandwidth bills, and dependable uploads without sacrificing clarity.

How Smart mode selects the right compression level

Smart mode is the default choice for every image you drop into the compressor. Instead of making you guess numbers, it applies an encoder quality of 0.75 directly to your photos. This level provides near visually lossless results for photography while removing redundant bytes.

Photos retain natural skin tones, sharp edges, and fine textures under Smart compression. The engine evaluates every output against your original file. If compressing an image would make it larger, the tool never returns an inflated file. It keeps your original bytes intact and displays the result immediately.

How target size search reaches your byte budget

When you need to satisfy a strict upload ceiling, you can pick a specific size chip such as 20 KB, 50 KB, 100 KB, or 200 KB. For example, when you need to compress an image to 100 KB, the compressor runs an automated search routine directly in your browser.

The engine begins with a binary search across compression tiers, measuring intermediate byte lengths. If a compressed result lands within about 3 percent below the target, the algorithm accepts it immediately. This margin ensures your file meets upload caps without unnecessary processing delays.

If an image contains too much detail to reach the target at the lowest compression level, the search advances. The engine progressively scales down pixel dimensions until the file fits your requested ceiling. If an unrealistic target cannot be reached even after dimensional scaling, the tool states that outcome plainly. Under no circumstances will the engine return a file that is bigger than your target or your original image.

Automatic format detection and the PNG rule

The tool chooses the output format automatically. A JPG file stays a JPG file, a WebP file stays a WebP file, and an AVIF file stays an AVIF file. Formats like GIF and SVG convert to PNG, while HEIC files convert to JPG.

PNG files follow a specialized rule. If your PNG contains any transparent pixels, it remains a PNG file to protect cutout graphics and logos. When you compress PNG graphics, the engine applies lossless optimizations and strips metadata without altering pixel values.

If a PNG is fully opaque with no transparency, the compressor checks whether saving it as a JPG yields substantial savings. If the lossless PNG result cannot reach your chosen target, or if a JPG version is at least 25 percent smaller, the tool saves the file as a JPG. A clear note explains that the image was saved as a JPG because it has no transparency. When you compress JPG photos, lossy encoding delivers dramatic size reductions while preserving apparent sharpness.

Comparing JPG, PNG, WebP, and AVIF formats

Different image formats serve distinct needs. JPG is the universal standard for photography, supported across all browsers. It uses lossy compression to discard visual frequencies that human eyes rarely distinguish.

PNG is built for diagrams, icons, screenshots, and artwork requiring pixel-perfect reproduction or transparent backgrounds. Because PNG uses lossless DEFLATE compression, it preserves exact pixel values at the cost of heavier files on photos.

WebP combines the strengths of both formats, offering lossy compression for photos alongside lossless graphics and alpha transparency. WebP files are typically twenty-five to thirty-five percent smaller than equivalent JPG files.

AVIF provides exceptional compression density derived from the AV1 video codec. It can shrink files up to fifty percent smaller than JPG. However, encoding AVIF inside a web browser requires substantial processing time. Generating AVIF files in large batches runs noticeably slower than JPG or WebP.

On-device privacy and background Web Workers

Most online image tools upload your photos to remote cloud servers. This practice creates security risks and forces you to wait for file transfers. Glowpixel Labs processes all files directly on your local device.

The compression engine runs entirely inside your browser tab using Web Workers. Because computation happens in background worker threads, the browser interface stays fast and responsive while your photos compress. You can review results, switch size chips, or queue more files without interface freezes.

Keeping processing on your device ensures absolute privacy, matching our privacy commitments. Your confidential photos and personal documents never travel over the network. Once page assets finish loading, you can disconnect your internet connection and compress photos offline.

Memory guards for high megapixel photos

Processing high-resolution camera photos inside a browser tab requires memory safeguards. A raw twenty-four megapixel photo expands into hundreds of megabytes of uncompressed pixel data in system memory. Without protection, processing multiple large files simultaneously could crash your browser tab.

Our engine applies an automated memory guard to prevent browser crashes. Images exceeding roughly 50 megapixels are automatically opened at reduced dimensions with an on-screen notice. Images exceeding 400 megapixels are safely refused before decoding begins.

Cameras and smartphones also embed hidden EXIF metadata into every picture, including camera serial numbers, exposure timestamps, and GPS coordinates. Our engine automatically strips all non-essential metadata and color profiles during re-encoding. This trims extra bytes and safeguards your privacy before you publish or share pictures online.

      FAQ

      Questions, answered

Common questions about formats, privacy, performance, and offline capabilities.

How does Smart mode choose a file size?

Smart mode uses an encoding quality of 0.75 without requiring a numeric target. This preserves near visually lossless detail for photographs while substantially reducing file weight. The engine never returns a file larger than your original.

Can I choose the output image format?

The tool selects the format automatically to give you the best result with zero configuration. JPG stays JPG, WebP stays WebP, and AVIF stays AVIF. GIF and SVG convert to PNG, while HEIC converts to JPG. Fully opaque PNG files may be saved as JPG when that produces a much smaller file.

Why was my PNG saved as a JPG?

If your PNG has no transparent pixels and converting it to JPG creates a significantly smaller file, the tool saves it as JPG. You get a noticeable size reduction while preserving visual appearance, along with a note explaining the change. PNG files with transparency always remain PNG.

What happens if a target size cannot be reached?

The engine searches through compression levels down to the lowest setting. If the file is still too large, it progressively scales down the pixel dimensions. If even downscaling cannot reach your target, the tool displays an honest message and never returns an oversized or inflated file.

Are EXIF metadata and GPS location removed?

Yes. All EXIF metadata, GPS coordinates, camera model tags, and embedded color profiles are automatically stripped during re-encoding. This trims extra bytes and protects your personal privacy before sharing or publishing images.

How does the compressor handle very large images?

To protect your browser memory from crashing, images larger than roughly 50 megapixels are automatically opened at reduced dimensions with an on-screen notice. Images larger than 400 megapixels are safely refused.

Are my photos kept private, and does the tool work offline?

Yes. Every compression task runs directly inside your browser using Web Workers. Your photos are never uploaded to remote servers. During your session, your active photos and chosen size settings are temporarily kept only in your browser's own storage on this device so your work is preserved if you refresh the page. They are removed when you press Clear, and deleted the next time you visit if you close the tab. Once the web page loads into your cache, you can disconnect from the internet and compress photos offline.

What are the batch processing limits?

You can compress up to 200 files in a single batch, with each individual file up to 100 MB. You can drop individual photos or an entire folder, and download all completed files together in a ZIP.

Will I notice any loss in image quality?

Smart mode and moderate target sizes preserve crisp details and clean edges, so differences are barely noticeable during normal viewing. You can inspect the real before-and-after comparison of your own photo to verify clarity before downloading.

What happens when I change the target size chip?

When you click a different size chip, the engine automatically re-compresses your finished images in the background. You do not need to click an Apply button or reload your photos.
