How to remove EXIF metadata from photos

    1. Select photos

Select one or more photos from your device, or drag and drop an entire folder of pictures to inspect.

    2. Inspect hidden tags

Review detected metadata fields including camera equipment, exposure values, and red alerts for GPS location.

    3. Strip and download

Click Remove Metadata to sanitize files losslessly. Download individual clean images or a single ZIP archive.

    Red GPS location alert

Instantly flags photos containing embedded satellite latitude and longitude coordinates before you share them.

    Lossless byte rewriting

Removes APP1, eXIf, and XMP segments without re-compressing JPEG, PNG, or WebP pixel entropy data.

    Batch cleaning to ZIP

Sanitize up to two hundred photos simultaneously and download all cleaned images bundled into a single ZIP.

    Overview

    What is EXIF Remover?

This page opens EXIF Remover with Keep rotation enabled. It inspects supported image metadata, clearly warns when GPS coordinates are found, and creates a cleaned copy with location and other metadata removed.

    Processing

    What happens to your photo

Four-step on-device pipeline from intake to final encoding without server roundtrips.

    Intake

Inspects binary file segments locally to detect TIFF headers, IFD records, and XMP XML packets.

    Parse

Decodes GPS rationals, camera model strings, exposure times, and timestamps into human-readable summaries.

    Sanitize

Rewrites file headers byte-for-byte, dropping tracking segments while preserving rotation flags.

    Export

Outputs pristine sanitized image files or packages batch results into a zip archive in local memory.

    Byte-identical pixels

JPEG, PNG, and WebP image payloads are never re-encoded; image clarity and pixel values remain 100% identical.

    GPS coordinate removal

Wipes latitude, longitude, altitude, and timestamp records so your physical whereabouts remain private.

    Equipment sanitization

Cleans camera make, model, lens specifications, and unique equipment identifiers from photo headers.

    Keep rotation option

Preserves the single EXIF orientation flag by default so portrait photos remain right-side up in every viewer.

    Zero network transmission

All metadata inspection and byte stripping happen purely in browser memory with no server uploads.

    Works completely offline

Run the tool on your laptop or smartphone even without an active internet connection.

A photograph can reveal more than its visible scene. Phones and GPS-enabled cameras may add latitude and longitude to EXIF metadata at capture time. Those coordinates can identify a home, workplace, school, trail, private event venue, or the location of valuable property even when the picture itself does not show an obvious landmark.

This page uses the EXIF Remover to inspect supported image files on your device. If GPS coordinates are detected, the result includes a clear red location warning. You can then remove that metadata and save a sanitized copy without sending the photo or its coordinates to a remote service.

    What GPS metadata can contain

EXIF GPS records commonly store latitude and longitude as degrees, minutes, and seconds plus north, south, east, or west references. A camera may also include altitude, a GPS timestamp, direction, or processing-method information. The exact set varies by device and its location settings.

Coordinates are not printed visibly across the image. They live in binary metadata fields that photo software, file inspectors, and specialist tools can read. Renaming a file, changing its extension, or copying it to another folder does not reliably remove those fields.

The viewer converts supported latitude and longitude values into a readable form so you can recognize the risk before cleaning. It intentionally provides no map. Avoiding a map request means the tool does not need to disclose the coordinates to an external mapping provider.

    Remove location before public sharing

Location cleaning is especially relevant for photographs taken at home, images of children, marketplace listings, private collections, workplace interiors, and travel pictures posted while a property is unattended. It can also matter for journalists, researchers, volunteers, and community organizations that need to protect sensitive sites.

Metadata removal is one privacy layer, not a promise of anonymity. The visible image may still expose street names, reflections, badges, distinctive buildings, screen content, or recognizable scenery. Review both the metadata summary and the picture itself before sharing it.

    Lossless handling for common formats

For JPEG files, metadata is stored in application segments separate from the compressed image scan. The remover filters the relevant segments without decoding and recompressing the JPEG pixels. This avoids a new generation of lossy compression. PNG and WebP metadata chunks are likewise rewritten without re-encoding their image payloads.

Other formats may require the existing image engine to create a clean re-encoded output because their container metadata cannot be safely rewritten through the same path. HEIC and AVIF can be reported as containing metadata even when every detailed tag is not available to the lightweight reader.

The result card lists the names and count of metadata fields removed, helping you verify what the operation found. Your original file remains unchanged; cleaning creates a new result.

    Understand the Keep rotation option

Keep rotation is enabled by default. Some cameras store pixels in a sensor-native direction and rely on EXIF Orientation to tell viewers how to turn them. Removing that instruction can make a portrait appear sideways in software that reads raw pixel order.

With Keep rotation enabled, the cleaner preserves only the orientation instruction when available while removing GPS and other inspected metadata. Turn it off when you specifically require complete EXIF removal and accept that display orientation may change in some viewers.

You can select multiple files—up to the tool’s batch limit of 200—and save cleaned batch results as a ZIP. Inspect warnings file by file because only some pictures in a set may contain location information.

Local inspection protects the data being removed

Sending a geotagged photo to a remote cleaning site would disclose the very information you are trying to protect. Here, parsing and byte rewriting take place in browser memory. The photo, its thumbnail, and its GPS values are not sent to Glowpixel Labs or a map provider. Nothing is uploaded. Our privacy policy explains the on-device model.

After cleaning, use the new copy for sharing and retain the original privately if you still need its capture information. If file size also matters, process the sanitized result with the image compressor; if dimensions need adjustment, use the image resizer.

      FAQ

      Questions, answered

Common questions about formats, privacy, performance, and offline capabilities.

How can a photo contain my location?

A phone or GPS-enabled camera can record latitude, longitude, altitude, and related GPS tags in the photo's EXIF metadata when location capture is allowed.

Does this tool show a map?

No. It displays detected latitude and longitude with a clear location warning, but it does not contact a mapping service or send coordinates over the network.

Does GPS removal change JPEG pixels?

For JPEG, the tool rewrites metadata segments without re-encoding the compressed image scan, so the underlying JPEG image data remains unchanged.

      Why is Keep rotation enabled?

Some cameras store portrait orientation as an EXIF tag. Keeping only that orientation value helps compatible viewers display the clean result upright while location and other tags are removed.

      Are my coordinates sent anywhere?

No. Metadata inspection and removal occur locally in your browser. Nothing is uploaded, and no map or network lookup is used.
