How to crop and rotate your images

    1. Choose your photo

Select any image from your computer or phone. Your photo loads directly into the interactive crop canvas.

    2. Adjust frame and angle

Drag the crop handles or use keyboard arrows. Pick aspect ratios, rotate 90 degrees, or level horizons with straighten.

    3. Download clean crop

Export in your preferred format and quality. Transparent corners are preserved for circular and ellipse crops.

    Aspect-locked precision

Lock proportions to popular social standards, passport sizing, or custom dimensions with pixel-accurate readout.

    Free-angle straightening

Level crooked horizons smoothly from -45° to +45° with automated canvas bounding-box calculations.

    Complete local privacy

All cropping, rotation matrices, and encoding run on your device processor with zero network data transfer.

    Overview

    What is Crop & Rotate?

This page opens Crop & Rotate with the 1:1 aspect ratio selected. Move and resize the square frame, rotate or straighten the source when needed, review the live result, and set the exact output width and height before saving.

    Processing

    What happens to your photo

Four-step on-device pipeline from intake to final encoding without server roundtrips.

    Intake

Decodes photo headers in browser memory, respecting embedded EXIF orientations automatically.

    Transform

Applies hardware-accelerated 2D affine matrix transforms for rotation, flipping, and straighten angles.

    Clip

Calculates bounding limits, aspect constraints, and optional circular alpha masks for smooth corners.

    Encode

Exports the cropped canvas to your chosen format and quality with local memory reclamation.

    Zero data leakage

Your personal pictures and confidential documents never leave your phone or computer.

    Circle & ellipse crops

Create circular profile photos with transparent PNG or WebP corners ready for immediate avatar use.

    Touch & keyboard control

Nudge 1 pixel with arrow keys, 10 pixels with Shift, zoom with plus/minus, or drag 44px touch targets.

    Exact output dimensions

View real-time pixel widths and heights, and type target dimensions directly into the editable fields.

    EXIF-aware orientation

Smartphone camera photos are uprighted before you begin cropping so your framing is always accurate.

    Runs anywhere offline

Operates fully in modern web browsers even when disconnected from cellular or Wi-Fi internet.

A square crop is useful whenever an image must fit a balanced, equal-sided frame. Product thumbnails, profile pictures, album artwork, contact cards, catalog grids, and many content-management systems use a 1:1 aspect ratio because it stays predictable across wide and narrow screens. A rectangular source rarely fits that shape without a deliberate choice about what to keep.

The preset on this page opens the Crop & Rotate tool with a 1:1 frame. It does not stretch a portrait or squeeze a landscape. Instead, the frame identifies a square region of the original picture, and everything outside that region is excluded from the new result.

Compose the square instead of accepting a center crop

Automatic center crops are convenient, but the geometric center is not always the visual center. A person may be standing to one side, a product may have an important label near an edge, or a landscape may need more sky than foreground. Drag the square over the part that matters, then resize it to include the right amount of context.

For portraits, leave comfortable space above the head and avoid placing eyes exactly halfway down the image. For products, check that handles, shadows, packaging, and other identifying details remain inside the frame. For graphics containing words, preserve enough margin that letters do not feel crowded against the boundary.

The stage includes keyboard controls for fine positioning. Arrow keys move the active frame by one pixel, while Shift with an Arrow key moves it by ten pixels. Plus and minus resize the selection. These controls are especially helpful when an edge, baseline, or face needs careful alignment.

    Choose output dimensions deliberately

Aspect ratio and pixel dimensions describe different things. The 1:1 ratio guarantees equal width and height, while the pixel value determines resolution. A 300 × 300 result and a 2000 × 2000 result are both square, but they suit different destinations.

Use the editable output-size fields to set the dimensions required by your project. A small interface avatar needs fewer pixels than printable artwork or a high-density product catalog. Enlarging a small crop cannot create detail that the source never contained, so favor a crop with enough source pixels for the intended result.

    Correct orientation before final framing

If a phone photo appears sideways, use the 90-degree controls before composing the square. The tool also respects decoded EXIF orientation so supported camera images begin upright. A slightly tilted horizon can be corrected with the straighten slider, and horizontal or vertical flips are available when the composition calls for a mirrored result.

Rotation can change the available boundaries, so review the crop after adjusting the angle. The live preview shows the rendered result rather than only the source with an overlay.

    Pick a suitable output format

JPEG is practical for ordinary photographs and offers a quality control. PNG is lossless and is often suitable for diagrams, screenshots, or graphics with sharp text. WebP can provide compact photographic output in browsers and applications that support it. A normal rectangular square crop does not require transparency, so format choice can follow the destination’s requirements.

Cropping does not modify the original file. The finished image is a separate result created in browser memory. If you need to reduce its storage size afterward, use the image compressor. If the composition is already correct and only its dimensions need changing, the image resizer may be the more direct option.

    Private processing on your device

Personal portraits, family photos, unreleased products, and identity documents deserve careful handling. The crop engine decodes and renders the selected file locally in your browser. Image pixels are not sent to Glowpixel Labs or a third-party processing service. Read the privacy policy for the broader site policy.

Before saving, inspect all four edges, confirm the displayed output size, and view the preview at a useful scale. That short review prevents clipped text, uneven headroom, and accidental omissions while producing a genuinely intentional square.

      FAQ

      Questions, answered

Common questions about formats, privacy, performance, and offline capabilities.

Does a square crop stretch my photo?

No. The tool selects a square area from the source instead of changing the proportions of objects inside it. You control which edges are removed by moving and resizing the frame.

Can I choose an exact square size?

Yes. The output dimensions are editable, so you can request matching width and height values such as 800 × 800 pixels after composing the crop.

Can I reposition the crop with a keyboard?

Yes. Focus the crop frame and use an Arrow key for a one-pixel move, or Shift plus an Arrow key for a ten-pixel move. Plus and minus resize the selection.

Will my source image be changed?

No. The browser creates a new cropped result for you to save. Your original file remains untouched on your device.

Is the image sent to a server?

No. Decoding, framing, previewing, and encoding happen locally in your browser. Nothing is uploaded. See our privacy policy for more detail.
