How to extract text from an image

    1. Choose an image

Select, drop, or paste a screenshot, photograph, or scan from your device.

    2. Set recognition options

Choose one or two languages and enable document cleanup when the background is uneven.

    3. Extract and review

Run local recognition, edit the result, inspect line confidence, then copy or save it as TXT.

    Seven OCR languages

Recognize English, Arabic, French, Spanish, German, Portuguese, or Italian, with up to two languages in one pass.

    Helpful document cleanup

Optional grayscale and adaptive thresholding can clarify dark text on uneven paper without changing your original file.

    Private local recognition

The OCR worker, WebAssembly core, and language data are self-hosted, while every recognition operation stays on your device.

    Overview

    What is Image to Text?

This preset suits photographed pages and JPEG scans. English and optional document cleanup are ready, helping separate dark print from uneven lighting while all recognition remains on your device.

    Processing

    What happens to your photo

Four-step on-device pipeline from intake to final encoding without server roundtrips.

    Inspect

Checks the selected file and reads its dimensions locally before recognition begins.

    Prepare

Downscales images above a 4000-pixel long edge and applies optional grayscale thresholding.

    Recognize

Runs Tesseract.js with one or two locally loaded tessdata_fast language models.

    Review

Normalizes the text for editing and exposes confidence for individual recognized lines.

    No remote OCR service

Image pixels remain inside the browser; recognition assets come only from this site.

    On-demand language data

The interface shows the model download size before a selected language is loaded and caches it for reuse.

    Two-language documents

Select a second language for bilingual pages instead of forcing every word through one alphabet.

    Arabic reading direction

Arabic results use right-to-left presentation so editing follows the natural reading direction.

    Confidence review

Optional per-line labels and shading help identify passages worth comparing with the source image.

    Cancelable processing

Cancel terminates the active OCR worker rather than leaving recognition running in the background.

JPEG is the format used by most camera photos and many scanners, so printed information frequently ends up locked in a .jpg file. A photographed letter, receipt, book page, equipment label, or meeting handout is easy to view but awkward to search and quote. The Image to Text tool creates editable text from that visible print while carrying out recognition in your browser.

Why photographs need a different OCR approach

A digital screenshot begins with uniform light and geometrically straight text. A JPEG photo may include perspective, lens softness, paper texture, compression blocks, or a shadow from the person holding the camera. This page therefore begins with document preprocessing enabled. The working image is converted to grayscale and adaptive thresholding evaluates local brightness, which can separate dark letters from a background that changes across the page.

Preprocessing is optional rather than a universal improvement. Disable it for a clean scanner-generated JPEG, a colorful poster whose characters depend on subtle edges, or a photo where very thin type disappears after thresholding. Comparing two passes is often more useful than assuming one filter is always correct.

The original JPEG is never rewritten. Recognition uses a temporary browser representation. If the longest edge is above 4000 pixels, that working representation is proportionally downscaled as a memory guard. Large camera dimensions do not always improve OCR because motion blur and focus establish the true detail limit.

    Capture a stronger source

Lay the paper flat and position the camera parallel to it. Fill the frame with the page while retaining every text edge. Use bright, diffuse light from more than one direction to reduce hard shadows, and avoid flash reflections on glossy receipts or laminated cards. Tap to focus on the printed lines rather than a nearby object. When photographing a book, reduce page curvature without damaging the binding.

Select the language that matches the print: English, Arabic, French, Spanish, German, Portuguese, or Italian. You may add one more for bilingual documents. The second model helps when both languages are genuinely present, but it does not translate either language. Arabic selection also gives the result area right-to-left presentation.

    Local models and deliberate loading

OCR code and language data are relatively substantial, so they load only when you activate Extract text. The tool shows the uncached model size in advance. Tesseract.js, its worker and WebAssembly core, and the tessdata_fast resources are hosted on the same site; the JPEG itself does not become a remote OCR request. Browser Cache Storage can retain loaded model resources for reuse.

Named progress stages explain what the current job is doing. If a high-resolution or complicated page takes longer than useful, Cancel terminates the active worker. This is genuine cancellation rather than simply hiding a progress indicator.

Treat the output as transcription to verify

The result textarea is editable. Receipt columns, form fields, and multi-column articles may not follow their original spatial layout because TXT has no page grid. Correct the reading order, join wrapped lines, and inspect punctuation. Confidence labels help identify uncertain lines, but always verify totals, reference numbers, dates, names, and contractual wording directly against the JPEG.

Copy the corrected passage for immediate use or save it as a .txt file. No EXIF camera metadata is placed in that output; it represents visible recognized text. For broader details about local handling, read the privacy policy.

JPG-to-text recognition works best as a head start. A careful photo supplies clear evidence, OCR removes much of the repetitive typing, and a human review resolves the ambiguities that remain. That is especially important for compressed scans and real-world camera images, where a plausible word is not necessarily the printed word.

      FAQ

      Questions, answered

Common questions about formats, privacy, performance, and offline capabilities.

Why is preprocessing enabled for JPG photos?

Camera images often contain shadows, paper tint, and uneven lighting. Grayscale plus adaptive thresholding may make printed strokes clearer, though you can disable it for a clean JPEG scan.

      Is my JPEG altered?

No. OCR uses a working bitmap in browser memory. The selected file on your device is not rewritten.

Can the tool recognize a phone photo of a receipt?

It can extract clear printed lines, but columns, totals, faint thermal print, and logos may need manual correction and ordering.

Will EXIF or camera metadata appear in the TXT result?

No. The output contains recognized visible text, not the JPEG metadata fields.

Can I stop a slow high-resolution recognition job?

Yes. Cancel terminates the active OCR worker. Large images are also constrained to a 4000-pixel recognition edge.
