AI inference executes inside your browser via WebAssembly and WebGPU; image data is never uploaded to any remote server.

    Edge refine & touch-up

Feather edges, expand or shrink cutout boundaries, and use brush restore and erase tools for strand-level control.

    Flexible backdrops

Export clean transparent PNG cutouts, solid studio backdrops for ecommerce, or artistic background blur.

    Overview

    What is Background Remover?

Remove Background from Image provides private on-device cutout processing. Choose between Portraits (7 MB) for fine hair matting on people, and Pets and objects (44 MB) for animals, products, and ecommerce items with sharp contours. It is model download only; your image never leaves your device. Manual touch-up brushes refine intricate details.

    Processing

    What happens to your photo

Four-step on-device pipeline from intake to final encoding without server roundtrips.

    Inspect

Loads the source photo locally and bounds maximum dimension to 4000 pixels for safe memory usage.

    Preprocess

Converts image pixels to a normalized RGB float tensor matching the model input specifications.

    Segment

Executes the on-device MODNet matting network using hardware-accelerated WebGPU or WebAssembly.

    Upscale

Upscales the precision matte back to full image resolution and applies edge refinement filters.

    Strict zero-upload privacy

Unlike remote AI services that store your photos, your visual content never leaves your local computer.

    Compact cached model

The quantized 7 MB model downloads once and is stored in browser Cache Storage for instant offline reuse.

    High-contrast preview

Inspect cutouts against a high-contrast transparency checkerboard to detect any leftover fringe or spill.

    Edge boundary shifting

Erode or dilate the matte border by pixels to eliminate harsh background halos around complex silhouettes.

    Manual touch-up brushes

Use keyboard-operable restore and erase brushes to hand-correct stray hairs, jewelry, or intricate cutouts.

    Commercial-friendly license

Powered by an Apache-2.0 and MIT runtime stack without restrictive non-commercial or copyleft limitations.

Extracting a subject from a distracting or messy setting is one of the most common tasks in modern digital photography. Whether you are assembling a composite image for an advertising campaign, designing a custom sticker, or isolating a headshot for a corporate bio, starting with a clean cutout makes the entire design process faster. The Background Remover tool handles this task completely on your device without routing your photos through external cloud APIs.

Why on-device processing matters for photo editing

Traditional online background removers require you to upload your personal photos to their servers. This introduces real privacy concerns, particularly when handling unreleased product prototypes, family snapshots, sensitive corporate documents, or private client photoshoots. Server uploads also introduce frustrating upload delays on slow mobile data connections.

With on-device AI, your picture stays inside your browser. The browser downloads the model once (around 7 MB for portraits, or 44 MB for pets and objects) into local cache. It is model download only; your image never leaves your device. From that point forward, cutting out a photo is entirely local. Even if you lose internet connectivity while editing, you can continue selecting images, adjusting borders, and exporting cutouts.

    The automated matting workflow

When you select an image, the tool inspects its dimensions. To protect your device’s memory, ultra-high-resolution photos with a longest edge above 4000 pixels are proportionally scaled for the neural network. The neural network computes a continuous alpha matte rather than a harsh binary cutout. This soft matte captures individual hair strands, fuzzy pet fur, and translucent cloth with natural realism.

After the initial cutout finishes, you can inspect the result against a high-contrast checkerboard:

    1. Verify edges: Check for color spill or fringing along the borders of your subject.
    2. Apply boundary shifting: If bright light from the old background bleeds into the silhouette, adjust the Shift edge slider inward by one or two pixels to shave away the halo.
    3. Smooth with feathering: Add subtle edge feathering (between 1 and 3 pixels) to help the subject blend realistically when composited onto dark slides or colorful marketing posters.
    4. Touch up with brushes: If fine details such as an earring or bag strap were clipped, select the Restore brush (R) and paint over the area to bring the pixels back.

Exporting transparent cutouts for graphic design

Once satisfied with the preview, save your cutout as a 32-bit transparent PNG. PNG format retains every level of opacity, ensuring smooth blending against any backdrop in Canva, Photoshop, Figma, or presentation software. Alternatively, choose WebP for a more compact file size when building lightweight web assets.

Our privacy policy details our strict on-device commitment. By keeping every pixel under your direct control, you get the speed of modern artificial intelligence paired with uncompromising personal privacy.

      FAQ

      Questions, answered

Common questions about formats, privacy, performance, and offline capabilities.

Does removing the background upload my picture anywhere?

No. All AI calculations happen directly inside your web browser. It is model download only; your image never leaves your device. No pixel data is ever transmitted across the internet.

      What photo subjects work best?

Human portraits deliver the sharpest cutouts with the 'Portraits (fast, 7 MB)' model due to hair-level matting. For animals, pets, merchandise, and objects, select the 'Pets and objects (better, 44 MB)' model. Delicate borders can also be cleaned up with the built-in Restore and Erase brushes.

Can I adjust the cutout edges if hair looks fuzzy?

Yes. Use the Feather slider to soften the edge transition by 1 to 2 pixels, and the Shift edge slider to shrink or expand the mask boundary.

What format should I download for transparency?

Download as a PNG file. PNG supports a full 8-bit alpha channel, allowing you to paste the cutout onto any background in graphic design software.

Is there a limit on file size?

Photos up to 100 MB are supported. Very large images beyond 4000 pixels on their longest side are safely optimized to prevent browser memory issues.
